- Lost Ladies of Literature: 2nd Wednesday 6:30-8:30pm
Inspired by the Lost Ladies of Literature podcast (which we highly recommend!) - we read "lost" classics by women authors.
- To Be Read: 2nd Saturday 12:00-2:00pm
Currently, we alternate monthly between general literature and sci-fi classics. Our goal is to read books driven by broader concepts and themes, rather than driven by characters or straight narratives.
- Books & Banter: 3rd Monday 6:00-8:00pm
We have no specific goal or genre, we just pick books we want to read and discuss. We've read everything from mysteries to newly published literary fiction.
- Classics: 4th Monday 6:00-8:00pm
We read literary classics. Twice a year, we select a longer work, which we then discuss in parts over the following meetings.
- Queer Women: Last Saturday 10:30-12:00pm
Community-run! A casual reading group to meet queer friends in Alexandria. Gender fluid, gender non-conforming, and non-binary friends are also more than welcome to join!Non-Traditional Book Clubs meet every month.
- Duncan Literary Society: 2nd Thursday 6:00-8:00pm
Run by Duncan Library! No assigned reading, just chatting about books we've read/want to read with other avid readers.
- Silent Book Club: 3rd Saturday 1:00-3:00pm
Community-run! Everyone is free to socialize for the first 15 minutes, and then we all settle in with whichever book we've brought to read in a relaxed atmosphere with no interruptions.
- Board/card games: We have a large collection of games in the store, but people often bring games from home as well. We've played family staples like Ticket to Ride! and Splendor, as well as more complex games. Occasionally, we've gotten to play-test some games before they've been released! There's usually more than one game going at a time, depending on the number of people attending. There's no signup required, just come and join the fun!
- Dungeons & Dragons: Multiple tables run every meeting, including two ongoing campaigns, and a series of shorter one-shots or shorter campaigns. No experience is required. There is a Discord server players can join upon request.
- Basic D&D system information: The group generally uses 5e rules. You can build/create your own character sheet (no higher than level 5), or use a pre-built character that we have here at the bookstore. We have pencils, dice, paper, and minis to borrow, but you're also welcome to bring your own from home.
Primarily for kids ages 6 and younger. We read a few books, and then do some crafting/coloring/drawing. If the group is larger than our kids room can accommodate, we move up to our third floor hang out space.
Kid's Only Dungeons & Dragons: Every other Tuesday 5:30-8:30Runs on the same week as the regular Dungeons & Dragons night, and follows the same system information. We will NOT have a DM available, so the kids will be in charge of running their own games. However, there will be a staff member available to supervise and answer questions.
We require at least one supervising adult for every four kids under the age of twelve.* It's absolutely fine if parents want to coordinate for who stays, but we need to have designated adults in the bookstore- parents cannot drop off their kids and leave. A sign-up sheet will be available for parents to provide contact information in case of emergencies.
*To clarify: This does not mean "one adult in the room for every four kids," this means "one adult specifically designated in advance for up to four specific kids."
